Delta TechOps recently held its ninth annual Ride 4 the Fight event, raising more than $17,000 for cancer research. The charity cycling event was started in 2017 by Emiel Akkermans, Maintenance Manager at Delta’s Amsterdam (AMS) station, after he lost a close friend to cancer. Supported by Jerry Allen, Senior Vice President of Delta TechOps Operations, the first ride took place in Brussels with about 75 cyclists completing a route from Brussels to Amsterdam.

This year’s event on September 27 saw participation grow to 150 riders—the largest group in the event’s history. Cyclists came from various departments across Delta Air Lines and represented over ten stations worldwide, including JFK, SEA, BOS, ATL, MSP, DUB, FRA, AMS, SLC, DTW and MSP. Participants could choose from four different routes; the longest covered just over 100 miles (185 kilometers), marking Delta’s centennial year.

The ride passed through Nijmegen in the Netherlands and included scenic routes across Dutch landscapes and historical World War II sites. Some segments even crossed into Germany. Riders wore custom Delta Centennial jerseys provided by co-sponsor EV Cargo and used bikes supplied by Tomas Planken and Joy Rides rentals. Food and drinks were provided by Gate Gourmet.

The funds raised—over $17,000 or about 15,000 euros—were donated to the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF). The check presentation supports both cancer research and efforts to improve the lives of those currently affected by cancer.

"Delta TechOps' support for the Dutch Cancer Society in the Ride 4 the Fight today is a powerful reminder of our responsibility to help those in need — a core part of Delta’s culture of giving back to our communities,” said Jerry Allen.

“It’s amazing to work for a company and a leader like Jerry, who backed this event and sponsors us to do this every year,” Emiel Akkermans said. “Watching the event grow each year is truly inspiring. Thank you to every sponsor, supporter and rider who made this possible."

The Amsterdam-based Delta TechOps team consists of 27 employees operating 17 flights daily out of Schiphol Airport. This team also provides maintenance support at other European stations such as Rome, Copenhagen, Geneva, Zurich, Athens, Stockholm, Brussels and Lagos.

In addition to Ride 4 the Fight, giving back is an important value at all Delta stations. A week before this year's bike ride, AMS TechOps partnered with Stichting Hoogvliegers and Royal Schiphol Group for an aviation experience day for children with special needs aboard Delta's A321s and A330s aircraft.

The team is also involved in developing future talent through teaching programs and student internships with local technical aviation colleges.

For Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Delta marks its two-decade partnership with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). Over twenty years working together has resulted in $33 million raised for breast cancer research funding more than 660,000 hours of research.
