Chase expands Pay Yourself Back options across multiple credit cards

Chase's Pay Yourself Back program continues to be available on a range of its credit cards, including both general and cobranded products. The program allows cardholders to redeem points for statement credits on eligible purchases, offering an alternative way to use rewards beyond travel bookings.

Launched in 2020 as part of Chase's response to limited travel during the pandemic, Pay Yourself Back has evolved but remains focused on providing flexible redemption options within the Ultimate Rewards program. The feature now covers more categories and is valid through December 31 for many current offers.

The redemption value varies by card and purchase category. For example, holders of the Chase Sapphire Reserve or J.P. Morgan Reserve Card can redeem points at 1.5 cents per point toward qualifying charities and at 1.25 cents per point for department stores, gas stations, groceries, home improvement stores, and annual fees. The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card offers 1.25 cents per point for charities and 1.1 cents per point for its annual fee.

Cobranded cards such as United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Aeroplan Credit Card, Marriott Bonvoy Bold Credit Card, and Disney credit cards also participate with different redemption rates depending on the type of purchase or fee involved.

A unique aspect of Pay Yourself Back is its support for charitable donations at higher redemption rates compared to standard purchases. For instance, redeeming 10,000 points with the Chase Sapphire Reserve toward charity results in a $150 statement credit versus $100 when used for most other eligible transactions.

To use Pay Yourself Back, customers log into their account online or via the mobile app and select eligible recent purchases—up to 90 days old—for points redemption. Statement credits typically post within three business days after completing a transaction.

Chase continues to offer traditional cash-back redemptions at a fixed rate of one cent per point through its Ultimate Rewards platform—a value that is lower than some Pay Yourself Back categories but still compares favorably with similar programs from other issuers such as Citi ThankYou Points (also one cent per point), American Express Membership Rewards (0.6 cents per point), and Capital One miles (0.5 cents per mile).

Whether using Pay Yourself Back represents good value depends on each cardholder’s specific circumstances—including their points balance and how they plan to use their rewards.

More information about maximizing Ultimate Rewards redemptions can be found in guides like “Supercharge your Chase Ultimate Rewards balance with these top 5 cards” published by The Points Guy.
