Virgin Australia has introduced a new feature that allows economy class passengers to bid for an empty seat next to them on select domestic and international flights. The airline says this "neighbor-free seating" initiative is designed to give travelers more comfort and privacy.
The program follows a 2023 survey of the airline’s Velocity Frequent Flyer members, where 42% indicated they would pay extra for a vacant adjacent seat on international flights longer than three hours. Eligible economy ticket holders can now submit bids for the additional seat via the Virgin Australia app or website. Bids start at AU$30 (about $19), and confirmations are made up to two hours before departure.
Libby Minogue, Chief Marketing Officer at Virgin Australia, said, “Our priority is to give Virgin Australia guests even more value and choice when they choose to fly with us. Neighbour-Free Seating is a clever add-on for Economy travellers who want the certainty of extra space without the price tag.”
