American Airlines has announced it will remove carry-on bag sizers from its gate areas, a move confirmed by an airline spokesperson after initial reports from View from the Wing. This change means travelers will no longer be asked by gate agents to measure their bags before boarding. Instead, employees are being directed to give passengers the benefit of the doubt if there is uncertainty about whether a bag fits in the overhead bin.
A spokesperson for American Airlines explained the decision: "As we further simplify the boarding experience for our customers and team members, American will soon remove bag sizers from the gate area."
The airline clarified that this update does not alter its existing size requirements for carry-on luggage or its broader baggage policies. Bag sizers will remain available in check-in areas so travelers can check if their carry-ons fit overhead, and oversized items must still be checked in before flying, including at the gate if necessary.
