German authorities have introduced a laser system at Munich Airport in response to several drone sightings that disrupted operations earlier this month. This action follows a series of similar incidents at airports across Europe.

Munich Airport first experienced drone-related disruptions on October 2, leading to the cancellation of 17 flights and the diversion of another 15 to other airports in southern Germany and Vienna International Airport in Austria. Additional drone sightings occurred on Friday evening and Saturday morning, causing delays and further cancellations during a busy holiday weekend following German Unity Day.

The airport stated, "When a drone is suspected of being sighted, the safety of travellers is the top priority. Reporting chains between air traffic control, the airport, and police authorities have been established for years."

According to security sources cited by Bild newspaper via Euro News, the newly installed laser equipment is designed to help identify the distance of drones from the airport. This technology aims to speed up search procedures when drones are detected near the facility. The airport also noted that "helicopters from the Federal and Bavarian State Police were also deployed to monitor the airspace and conduct searches" last week.

On October 4 alone, there were significant operational impacts: departures saw 29 cancellations (5%) and 219 delays (39%), while arrivals had 31 cancellations (5%) and 158 delays (28%).

Responsibility for protecting German airports from drones does not fall directly on individual airports but rather on police authorities, with support from air traffic control and state aviation security bodies.

The timing of these disruptions was particularly challenging due to their occurrence over a long holiday weekend and during Oktoberfest’s final days. Many travelers required overnight accommodation as flights were delayed or canceled late in the evening. In response, Munich Airport reported that "camp beds were set up, and blankets, drinks, and snacks were provided" for stranded passengers as staff coordinated with airlines.

The airport continued offering support into Sunday as it worked to restore normal operations. It added that "some shops, restaurants, and a pharmacy in the public area [extended] their opening hours and [remained] open throughout the night" to assist affected travelers.
