A321XLR | Airbus

For travelers and aviation fans, flying on a new aircraft can be a memorable experience. AirlineRatings joined the first passenger flight of Qantas' A321XLR between Sydney and Perth, offering a comparison to the airline's previous use of 737-800s on similar routes.

The new A321XLR features several upgrades for passengers. Each seat is equipped with both USB-A and USB-C charging ports, complimentary Wi-Fi, device and tablet holders, winged headrests, and extra storage pockets. The Airspace overhead compartments provide increased space for carry-on bags, which helps boarding move more quickly and with less hassle.

In economy class, the seat pitch remains at 30 inches, matching that of the 737s, but seat width has increased to 17.6 inches, with better cushioning for comfort. Passengers can stream in-flight entertainment to their own devices from a broad content library. Future versions of this aircraft will have seatback screens for longer routes. The windows on the Airbus A321 are larger than those on the 737, allowing more light into the cabin. Economy passengers receive meal choices and complimentary drinks.

Business class on the A321XLR offers enhanced recliner seats compared to those found on the outgoing 737-800s. Each business seat includes a footrest, leg rest, storage compartment with wireless phone charging, and an integrated sensor light for overnight flights. Business passengers also have access to Wi-Fi and streaming entertainment.

Crew members expressed pride in being part of this milestone for Qantas as it renews its fleet. The sentiment among pilots and staff was positive about introducing the new aircraft.

The review also noted Qantas' attention to young aviation enthusiasts onboard. Staff made efforts to involve children interested in aviation by arranging pre-takeoff visits with pilots.

After landing, AirlineRatings staff visited the cockpit of the A321XLR, describing it as advanced and impressive.

"Well done, Qantas—a lot of hard work, brilliantly executed."

"Speaking with both the pilots and crew on today’s flight, the resounding sentiment was that it’s shiny, new, and wonderful."

"Qantas didn’t just take them as passengers—they involved them, let them speak with the pilots before takeoff, and went out of their way to make the experience truly special."
