Spring Airlines, based in Shanghai, has established itself as China’s largest low-cost airline with a fleet of 134 Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft. Founded in 2004 by the Spring Travel Agency, the airline began operations in 2005 and focused on providing affordable air travel for China’s growing middle class. By operating only the Airbus A320 family and using dense seating layouts, Spring Airlines has differentiated itself from major state-owned carriers such as Air China, China Eastern, and China Southern.

Josh Wood, Safety and Service Quality Manager at AirlineRatings, reviewed six flights with Spring Airlines on both domestic and international routes to assess its service.

The airline’s planes are configured in an all-economy layout with a standard 3-3 seating arrangement. Extra legroom seats are available in rows 1 and 2 and at emergency exits, while most seats have a pitch between 28 and 29 inches. Wood noted that “extra legroom is worth paying for on overnight flights,” but standard seats are manageable for shorter trips. The seats do not recline or have adjustable headrests, which is typical for low-cost carriers.

Spring Airlines does not offer inflight Wi-Fi, entertainment systems, blankets, pillows, or amenity kits. There are no in-seat power outlets and passengers are prohibited from using power banks during any stage of the flight. Passengers are advised to charge their devices beforehand and download any content needed for longer flights.

Food and drinks are available for purchase rather than being complimentary. The menu includes two hot meal options along with snacks tailored mainly to Chinese tastes. Prices are generally considered affordable to international travelers but may seem higher to some local passengers. According to Wood: “The meals were actually incredibly tasty which this reviewer didn’t expect.”

Cabin crew on Spring Airlines are described as structured and efficient. They focus on delivering services smoothly rather than engaging in casual conversation but remain friendly and approachable throughout the flight. On one occasion observed by Wood, cabin crew provided attentive support to a passenger who boarded with a nosebleed.

In terms of safety, Spring Airlines holds a seven out of seven rating from AirlineRatings. The carrier has maintained a crash-free record, passed the IOSA audit successfully, operates modern aircraft with an average age of 8.5 years for A320s and 4.2 years for A321s, and reports very few incidents.

Spring Airlines serves over 80 domestic destinations from its Shanghai hubs as well as other key cities across China. Its international network includes routes to Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Singapore. The airline focuses on high-frequency short-haul flights within East Asia.

Looking ahead to 2026, Spring Airlines plans to introduce new aircraft to expand its network further while updating its livery to modernize its brand image.

“AirlineRatings recommends Spring Airlines as a Seven Star rated low-cost carrier for safety.”
