Every year on October 7, KLM marks its founding anniversary by unveiling a new Delft Blue miniature house, a tradition that began in the 1950s. These blue-and-white ceramic houses, originally filled with Bols Genever liquor, are distributed to business-class passengers on intercontinental flights as a gesture of appreciation. The collectibles have become highly sought after by frequent flyers and aviation enthusiasts.

This year, KLM introduced its 106th Delft house: Villa Rameau in Leiden. The building, dating back to the mid-17th century, was initially constructed as the home for the sexton of Pieterskerk (St. Peter's Church). Over time, it has served various purposes and is currently being converted into the Leiden American Pilgrim Museum, scheduled to reopen at this new location on October 15.

Leiden holds historical significance as the city where many pilgrims lived before departing for North America aboard the Mayflower. The local celebration of a harvest festival in Leiden is considered a precursor to Thanksgiving in the United States. In more recent history, members of the Rameau family participated in resistance activities during World War II.

The unveiling ceremony for this year's Delft house took place at Pieterskerk due to space limitations at Villa Rameau. The event was attended by KLM CEO Marjan Rintel, other airline executives, staff members, customers, partners, and Leiden city officials. Rintel stated before revealing the new house: "With the unveiling of Villa Rameau as our 106th Delft Blue house, we're not only celebrating our birthday, but also the importance of connection and resilience." She added: "These values are reflected in the story of the house and the Pilgrims, and they're also at the heart of KLM."

Rintel continued: "Especially in challenging times, this house reminds us how vital it is to stay connected. It's a small symbol with a big story about how we keep innovating and shaping the future of aviation."

During her speech at the event, Rintel addressed current issues affecting Dutch aviation ahead of upcoming elections—such as potential airport closures and proposed flight taxes—while emphasizing KLM's commitment to maintaining connections within Europe and beyond. She presented a miniature version of Villa Rameau to Perry Cantarutti, Delta’s senior vice president of alliances and international relations. This act recognized both airlines’ transatlantic partnership and Delta’s centennial anniversary.

Attendees participated in a meal reminiscent of Thanksgiving before touring part of the soon-to-open Pilgrim Museum.

Villa Rameau is now one of five KLM Delft houses representing buildings from Leiden; others include Japan Museum SieboldHuis (No. 93), Holy Spirit Children's Home (No. 44), City Carpenters Yard (No. 29), and Boerhaverhuis (No. 19). Mark Zegeling—author and researcher on these historic houses—led media tours around Leiden during this year’s celebration.

Business-class passengers can request Villa Rameau on KLM flights starting this week or exchange another miniature for it at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport’s Crown Lounge.

KLM continues to offer these collectible miniatures alongside other amenities for premium travelers as part of its customer experience strategy.
