Hollywood Burbank Airport experienced a disruption in operations on Monday evening due to a lack of air traffic controllers, a situation linked to the ongoing government shutdown and a nationwide shortage of controllers. According to NBC Los Angeles, multiple absences left the airport without any controllers from 16:15 to 22:00.
Normally, air traffic controllers are considered essential employees who must report for duty during a government shutdown but do not receive pay. The current situation has increased pressure on an already understaffed workforce. Multiple controllers at Burbank called out sick or requested time off, compounding the problem.
During the absence of local controllers, remote support was provided by the SOCAL TRACON facility in San Diego. Despite this measure, significant delays and cancellations occurred. Some flights were delayed by nearly four hours, and aircraft continued departing after the airport’s voluntary curfew of 22:00 due to accumulated delays.
