Luis Rodrigues, CEO and Founder | Tap Air Portugal

TAP Air Portugal is preparing for expansion in Africa and Brazil as the Portuguese government moves forward with plans to privatize the national airline. At an event in Lisbon, CEO Luis Rodrigues highlighted the airline’s established presence in these regions, serving 13 cities in Brazil and 14 destinations across Africa, including major markets such as Angola and Mozambique.

Rodrigues emphasized the significant potential for growth in Brazil, noting that tourism represents about 6% of Brazil’s GDP compared to 16% in Portugal. He also pointed out opportunities in Africa, despite certain constraints. TAP’s current network spans North America, South America, Europe, and Africa, providing what Rodrigues described as “incredible diversity.” The company aims to simplify its geographic focus while seeking synergies in maintenance and engineering.

The privatization plan involves selling a 44.9% stake of TAP Air Portugal to private investors and an additional 5% to employees. This move is expected to bring new capital, aircraft, and marketing resources to help scale TAP’s operations. According to Rodrigues, "These links create a valuable visiting friends and relatives (VFR) dynamic," with Lisbon remaining a key connecting hub between continents.

TAP believes it has an advantage in Brazil and Africa due to existing brand recognition and airport access. The airline does not need to establish relationships or infrastructure from scratch in these areas. Further privatization could also mean partnering with a larger airline group—such as Lufthansa Group, Air France-KLM, or International Airlines Group (IAG)—to enhance its network reach.

Industry observers note that TAP operates under a unique business model focused on leisure travelers rather than premium passengers. This orientation reflects Portugal's economic context relative to other European countries. Potential partnerships with major legacy carriers could provide passengers with more travel options through improved alliances and loyalty programs but may face regulatory scrutiny from the European Union over market consolidation concerns.

Rodrigues reiterated TAP’s mission: "At the end of the day, TAP Air Portugal is a carrier that aims to connect different elements of the Portuguese and non-Portuguese speaking worlds through convenient, reliable air service." While bullish about future growth prospects—especially given strong demand for leisure travel—the airline acknowledges ongoing challenges related to shifting travel demographics and competition on underserved routes.

The planned privatization is seen as an opportunity for both investors and the airline itself but brings uncertainty regarding its impact on passengers as market dynamics evolve.
