Christy Hoffman General Secretary | UNI Global Union

An international delegation joined the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) in Ottawa as part of their ongoing strike to defend fair working conditions and maintain a public postal service. Representatives from unions in Argentina (FOECOP), Brazil (FENTECT and FINDECT), Trinidad and Tobago (TTPWU), and Spain (UGT) participated, demonstrating support for CUPW’s efforts.

Jan Simpson, President of UNI Americas Post & Logistics and recently elected UNI P&L President, addressed the gathering: “Privatization destroys the idea of a universal service. That’s why our response is unity and collective action. Today, we are not only raising the voices of postal workers here in Canada, but those of the entire continent.”

The demonstration followed a meeting of the Post & Logistics Regional Committee, where union leaders renewed their commitment to protecting public postal services, broadening universal access, and defending labor rights in the sector. Discussions focused on issues such as how trade agreements between the European Union and MERCOSUR might affect obligations for universal service, challenges from privatization efforts, and strategies to address changes brought by e-commerce and logistics expansion.

Marcio Monzane, Regional Secretary of UNI Americas, commented during the event: “In the face of corporate pressure and attempts at privatization, we reaffirm that collective bargaining is a tool to defend democracy. Across the region, the postal movement is resisting precarization and demanding new rights.”

At the conclusion of their meetings in Ottawa, affiliates from UNI Americas Post & Logistics called for continued defense of public postal services as essential to social inclusion, territorial cohesion, and decent work throughout the Americas.
