Unite Here! Local 11, Employees, LAX ticket counters | Original

According to eyewitness accounts, members of Unite Here Local 11 engaged in union activity at the Singapore Airlines ticket counters at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). This is part of ongoing actions that the airline claims have disrupted operations and raised safety concerns.

According to Labor Union Reporter, Air France Lounge LAX general manager Malika Sadoune said, "we have encountered union activity at the counters," and added that police were contacted but did not act because representatives were not physically blocking passengers. The report provides context for flyer distribution activities at Singapore Airlines and Virgin Atlantic counters at LAX.

FOX 11 Los Angeles reported that nearly 200 people, including two Los Angeles City Councilmembers, were arrested during a June 2023 hotel-worker protest near LAX that blocked Century Boulevard. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed 190 arrests tied to the action. This event highlights why repeated disturbances around terminal access points trigger heightened safety and operational concerns at LAX.

The Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) Rules and Regulations manual states that LAWA may regulate conduct, restrict or close areas, and enforce penalties when activity threatens safety or impedes operations inside terminals. The manual also limits solicitation, picketing, or demonstrations without prior authorization. This authority forms the basis for addressing recurring disruptions at airline ticket counters.

Congress.gov notes that the Gerardo Hernandez Airport Security Act of 2015 mandates enhanced emergency planning, communication, and coordination at airports following the 2013 LAX shooting. The statute’s requirements aim to reduce risks such as crowding and interference near critical facilities like ticket counters. This federal framework supports stricter responses to disruptive terminal activity.
