Lufthansa has started flying its first Boeing 787-9 aircraft equipped with the new Allegris cabin, marking a significant step in the airline’s fleet renewal efforts. The German carrier currently operates six Boeing 787-9s and expects to add more as part of an ongoing order for 29 additional aircraft.

The Allegris program, initially announced in 2017, faced several delays due to certification and supply chain issues. Originally set to debut on the Boeing 777X in 2020, the product only entered service in 2024. It is now available on select Airbus A350-900s and the latest Boeing 787-9.

On October 9, Lufthansa operated its first flight with a Boeing 787-9 featuring the Allegris cabin between Frankfurt and Toronto. The airline plans to expand this offering to other long-haul routes from Frankfurt, including Hyderabad (from October 26), Bogotá (from October 27), Rio de Janeiro (from October 28), and Austin (from December 2). Lufthansa expects nine more Boeing 787-9s to join its fleet by year-end.

Francesco Sciortino, Hub Manager Frankfurt at Lufthansa, stated: “Allegris has been enthusiastically received by guests…We are therefore particularly proud that the new premium cabin is now also being used on other routes and above all, from our largest hub.”

The Allegris redesign introduces updated seats across all classes—first, business, premium economy, and economy—with five seat types such as privacy seats along windows and front-row suites with sliding doors. On the Boeing 787-9s equipped with Allegris, there is no first class; instead, there are configurations for business class (28 seats), premium economy (28 seats), and economy (231 seats). Business class features include a large entertainment screen, minibar, wardrobe, and storage space.

Currently only some business class seats are available due to pending US Federal Aviation Administration certification for certain seat types. Only one of three seat designs has so far been approved for use on the Boeing 787-9. Full certification is expected by late 2025.

In Munich, Lufthansa operates nine Airbus A350-900s fitted with Allegris cabins out of a total fleet of thirty. These aircraft serve long-haul destinations such as Bangalore, Charlotte, Chicago, Newark, San Diego, San Francisco, Shanghai during summer months—and Cape Town, Miami, New York JFK and Tokyo Haneda starting from October 26 for winter operations.

Lufthansa aims to have around thirty aircraft equipped with Allegris cabins by end of next year and complete its broader reconfiguration program by 2027. The company has not yet announced when existing A350s will be retrofitted but indicated upgrades are planned for the future.
