The Airbus A340, once a mainstay of long-haul international travel, is approaching the end of its operational life in commercial aviation. The aircraft, known for its four engines and widebody design, has been surpassed by more efficient twin-engine jets that offer lower operating and maintenance costs.

Most airlines have already retired their four-engine long-haul fleets, with only a few operators such as Lufthansa and members of the Lufthansa Group still flying the A340. This persistence is largely due to the expansive reach of these carriers' route networks. The A340 first entered service in 1993 after being developed alongside the Airbus A330. Over its production run, which ended in 2011, Airbus delivered 377 units out of 380 orders.

The A340 was designed to overcome early limitations on twin-engine operations over remote areas and oceans. It enabled airlines to connect distant city pairs that were not suitable for larger aircraft like the Boeing 747 but required more capacity than smaller widebodies could provide. The jet became popular on routes between Europe and South America, Africa, and Asia.

Later variants such as the A340-500 set records for nonstop flight length, while the stretched A340-600 allowed for premium-heavy configurations without moving up to larger aircraft classes. However, advances in engine reliability and regulatory changes eventually allowed two-engine jets like the Boeing 787 to take over many of these roles.

The successor chosen by Airbus for long-range missions is the Airbus A350. This new model offers significant improvements in fuel efficiency and reduced maintenance requirements by using just two Trent XWB engines instead of four. The A350's advanced materials and aerodynamics also help reduce weight and improve range capability.

From an airline perspective, "the aircraft's high ETOPS approvals allow airlines to fly the Airbus A350 almost anywhere on Earth," according to industry sources cited in recent analyses. Passenger experience is improved with a quieter cabin environment, higher humidity levels, larger bins and windows, and a wider economy class layout compared to previous generations.

As of 2025, data from Ch-Aviation shows that Lufthansa operates about 30 Airbus A340s; Mahan Air flies 15; Conviasa has six; Edelweiss runs five; SWISS International Air Lines uses four; while several government operators around the world continue limited use due to restricted access to newer models.

Despite its past significance—having flown over 2.5 million flights carrying around 600 million passengers—the age of four-engine long-haul jets is coming to a close as modern carriers shift toward newer twinjets like the Airbus A350 that offer better economics and environmental performance.
