European aircraft manufacturer Airbus has projected that the global commercial aviation fleet will double over the next two decades. According to its Global Services Forecast (GSF), demand for aviation services is expected to see a 10% year-on-year increase in 2025, with total service demand anticipated to reach $311 billion by 2044 and an average annual growth rate of 3.6%.
The GSF report also states that passenger traffic is expected to hit five billion passengers this year and could double to 10 billion by 2044. Airbus notes that this growth will require airlines worldwide to expand their fleets with efficient and reliable aircraft suitable for regional, short-haul, and long-haul operations.
Airbus breaks down the projected $311 billion in service demand into five segments: off-wing maintenance (the most costly), on-wing maintenance, modifications and upgrades, digital and connectivity services, and training for flight and cabin crews. The company expects China, Europe, and North America to be the largest markets for these services by 2044, while China, South Asia, and the Asia-Pacific region are predicted to have the fastest growth rates.
