When considering long-haul travel, many passengers find the gap between economy and business class significant in both comfort and price. Premium economy cabins offer a compromise, providing extra space, enhanced amenities, and improved service without the high cost of business class. In the United States, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and American Airlines each have their own premium economy products with unique features.

Reviewers often define “comfortable” premium economy by looking at seat recline depth, leg and foot support, ergonomics, and how well service and amenities complement the seat itself. According to Eye of the Flyer’s 2024 review of Delta Premium Select:

“With the foot rest flipped up the rest retracts up a bit and you get less leg support. This really is a failed design … I would never again book it for a night flight when sleep matters.” Eye of the Flyer

This feedback highlights that more space does not always guarantee better comfort if certain features do not work as intended. Other travelers on forums like Reddit compare Delta’s product to domestic first class, mentioning:

“The seats basically feel like domestic first class — bigger entertainment screen, amenity kit, pillow, blanket … real glassware for cocktails.” Reddit

Delta's Premium Select offers wider seats with increased legroom and enhanced recline. Many passengers say these seats resemble those in domestic first class on long-haul flights. One reviewer said: "The seats basically feel like domestic first class — bigger entertainment screen, amenity kit, pillow, blanket, water bottles, headphones and real glassware." However, some critiques remain about food quality and service standards not always meeting “premium” expectations. As another passenger put it: "The food and in-flight service, however, still have a ways to go before you could call them 'premium'." Still, added benefits such as priority boarding are valued by many travelers.

United Airlines’ Premium Plus receives positive feedback for its consistent comfort levels across widebody aircraft configured in a 2-4-2 layout. Have Wheelchair Will Travel described it as “a more intimate space” with additional legroom allowing easy reach to bulkhead pockets. Going.com summarized United’s offering as “more comfortable than economy but not a lie-flat seat,” reflecting its position between affordability and comfort. Perks include Saks Fifth Avenue blankets and upgraded dining services.

Reviews note some variation depending on aircraft type; middle seats can be harder to access from the aisle on certain models like the 777-300ER. Occasional issues such as broken footrests are reported but are rare exceptions.

American Airlines’ Premium Economy is often seen as good value when priced close to Main Cabin fares but less so when costs rise significantly. The airline advertises wider leather recliners with adjustable rests but user experiences vary regarding meal quality and service consistency. Some reviewers describe improvements over standard economy but say they fall short compared to competitors’ offerings or fail to justify larger fare differences.

Across all three airlines, reviewers emphasize that soft products—such as amenity kits, improved cutlery, noise-canceling headsets (especially noted for Delta), upgraded bedding (highlighted for United), or attentive crew—can make an important difference in perceived comfort levels.

Ultimately, choosing the most comfortable premium economy option depends on factors such as route length, specific aircraft configuration (since these can vary even within one airline’s fleet), upgrade cost versus benefits received, and individual traveler priorities regarding space or service consistency.

Travelers are increasingly seeking predictability along with physical upgrades; reliable amenities and engaged staff often matter more than just seat dimensions alone when deciding whether an upgrade was worth it.
