Raj Subramaniam, CEO | FedEx

FedEx Express, recognized as the world's largest cargo airline by fleet size, employs over 5,800 pilots and operates nearly 400 aircraft across more than 375 destinations worldwide. The company’s pilot workforce is unionized under the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), which negotiates contracts related to pay and working conditions.

According to ThrustFlight data, entry-level First Officers at FedEx Express earn a basic annual salary of $77,760 in their first year. This figure increases to $162,240 in the second year and $197,760 in the third year. Captains receive higher salaries, starting at $224,640 in their first year and rising to $268,800 by their third year. These figures are based on a minimum of 74 flight hours per month and do not include additional compensation such as per diem payments or retirement contributions.

Pilots also benefit from various bonuses and incentives. For example, those working during peak holiday seasons can earn up to 50% of their monthly salary as a bonus. Profit sharing may provide up to 20% of annual salary depending on company performance. Overtime is paid at time-and-a-half for hours exceeding 80 per month and double time for more than 90 hours. Other incentives include delay pay for extended delays, trainer pay for those instructing other pilots, international flight bonuses of up to 20%, and seniority bonuses that increase with years of service.

These combined bonuses can add as much as $100,000 annually for experienced pilots. As a result, some FedEx Express captains may earn around $350,000 per year.

When compared with other cargo airlines such as UPS Airlines—where top captains can reportedly earn over $390,000—FedEx Express remains among the highest-paying employers in the sector. Independent operators like Atlas Air or Kalitta typically offer lower salaries; Amazon Air pays even less than legacy carriers.

FedEx Express maintains several pilot bases globally including locations in North America (such as Memphis International Airport), Asia (Hong Kong International Airport), and Europe (Cologne Bonn Airport). Candidates seeking employment must have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and at least 1,500 hours of fixed-wing flight experience—preferably on jet aircraft—and meet regulatory requirements set by agencies like the US Federal Aviation Administration.

Founded in Memphis in 1971, FedEx Express currently operates a mainline fleet of five aircraft types: Airbus A300-600F (64 units), Boeing 757-200SF (87), Boeing 767-300F (146 with six more on order), Boeing 777F (59 with eight on order), and McDonnell Douglas MD-11F (26). In addition to its mainline fleet totaling 382 aircraft—with another fourteen on order—the carrier utilizes an additional contracted regional fleet comprising ATRs and Cessna turboprops.

The company has faced challenges including increased competition from rivals like UPS Airlines and DHL along with changing global trade patterns. E-commerce growth has pressured traditional cargo carriers but also driven demand for air freight services during recent years.

Sustainability initiatives are central to FedEx Express operations; the airline aims for carbon-neutral operations by 2040 through investments in newer aircraft models and alternative energy sources. Safety records show only one fatal accident since its founding—a crash involving an MD-11F at Tokyo Narita Airport in March 2009 that resulted in two fatalities.

Despite industry shifts and competitive pressures, FedEx Express continues expanding its network through strategic partnerships while maintaining high standards for pilot compensation.
