Papua New Guinea's national airline, Air Niugini, has received its first Airbus A220 aircraft after a delivery flight that spanned four days. The new aircraft was manufactured in Canada and delivered to the airline’s base in Port Moresby, covering more than 16,500 kilometers with stops in Vancouver, Honolulu, and Nadi.

The journey began at Mirabel International Airport in Montreal on September 11. According to FlightRadar24 data, the aircraft departed at 17:45 local time and landed in Vancouver nearly five hours later. The next morning, it continued to Honolulu before flying to Nadi, Fiji. The final leg brought the plane to Port Moresby Jacksons International Airport on September 15 at 10:30 local time. Although the total flight time was just over 23 hours across four flights, overnight layovers and crossing the International Date Line extended the trip to four days.

This delivery marks the first of eleven A220s scheduled for Air Niugini’s fleet expansion. The airline initially ordered six A220-100s in 2023 and added two more earlier this year. Additionally, three larger A220-300 models were leased from US-based Azorra; the recently delivered jet is one of these.

With this addition, Air Niugini becomes the 25th customer of Airbus’s A220 program. Both variants will feature Economy and Business cabins—A220-100 configured for 113 passengers (8 Business, 105 Economy) and A220-300 for 138 passengers (8 Business, 130 Economy). The operational range is approximately 6,700 km for the smaller model and 6,300 km for the larger one.

Air Niugini CEO Gary Seddon commented on the significance of this acquisition: "The A220 is set to form the backbone of our domestic and regional fleet and will support economic development in Papua New Guinea."

Currently operating a mixed fleet that includes Boeing 737-800s, Boeing 767-300ERs, Bombardier Dash 8-400s, Fokker 100s, and Fokker 70s—with some aircraft inactive—the airline plans to phase out older planes as more A220s arrive. The new jets are expected to enhance efficiency and capacity while providing improved passenger experience.

In addition to expanding its narrowbody fleet with Airbus jets, Air Niugini has two Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners on order. These widebody aircraft are intended to replace existing Boeing 767s on long-haul routes and are expected to bring greater operational efficiency as well as increased range and comfort for travelers.
