The Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is nearing the completion of its $1.7 billion new terminal, which is expected to open by early November, ahead of the busy Thanksgiving and year-end holiday travel period. The new facility is the result of over ten years of planning and four years of construction, aiming to better serve the local community’s needs.

The terminal was designed by the firms Gensler, HDR, and Luis Vidal + Architects. Christina Cassotis, CEO of the Allegheny County Airport Authority, commented at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, "It's been a lot of work to get here." She added, "Being in this space feels good. And that's a pretty big statement for an airport to make." Cassotis also stated that while the exact opening date is not set, the terminal will be operational "several weeks" before Thanksgiving, pending final trials of security and baggage systems.

Pittsburgh’s airport has undergone significant changes since US Airways, once the primary airline at PIT, closed its hub in 2004 due to high costs and debt associated with the previous terminal. According to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium, US Airways flights at PIT dropped from 380 daily departures in May 2004 to just 143 by December of that year, with further reductions in the following years.

This decline was part of a broader trend during the airline consolidation period from 2005 to 2013, when other cities such as St. Louis, Cincinnati, Memphis, and Cleveland also lost their hub status with major airlines.

After the reduction in hub operations, PIT faced the challenge of operating a terminal built for up to 30 million annual passengers while serving only 9.9 million in 2024.

Despite these changes, airlines have begun to expand their presence at PIT. American Airlines resumed service to Los Angeles International Airport after nearly eight years, and JetBlue Airways restarted flights to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport after previous suspensions. In June 2026, Southwest Airlines plans to introduce new service to Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport in Florida and increase daily flights to Orlando International Airport from PIT.

The new terminal consolidates the airport’s footprint by replacing the previous separate terminal and X-shaped concourse with a single structure featuring 63 gates, down from 75. The old terminal and its underground train will be closed. The design aims to improve the passenger experience with features such as natural light and views inspired by the western Pennsylvania landscape. Travelers will enter a main hall with clear lines to ticket counters and security, marked by signage reading "TO ALL GATES."

Cassotis described the design by saying, "The results are stunning."

The airport authority expects the new terminal to be ready for travelers ahead of the holiday season.
