Cathay Pacific has announced on X that it will operate seasonal direct flights between Hong Kong and Adelaide Airport. The service will run three times per week, aiming to support both leisure and business travel between Hong Kong and South Australia.

According to Adelaide Airport’s official FY2025 passenger statistics report, the airport handled a record 8.73 million passengers in the year, marking a 2.3% increase compared to the previous year. This indicates strong underlying demand for international connectivity. The report also notes that international traffic surpassed one million passengers, highlighting momentum for routes linking South Australia with key Asian hubs. This growth context supports Cathay Pacific’s decision to add capacity on the Hong Kong–Adelaide city pair during the peak season.

The South Australian Tourism Commission’s "International Market Update 2024 – Hong Kong" reveals that Hong Kong ranked as South Australia’s ninth-largest inbound market for the year ending June 2024, with approximately 13,000 visitors contributing $37 million in expenditure. The profile reports an average stay of 24 nights and an average spend of about $2,897 per visitor, suggesting high-value, long-staying travel behavior. These characteristics imply that additional nonstops via Hong Kong can stimulate higher-yield visitation and longer lengths of stay into Adelaide and regional South Australia.

The latest international performance summary from the South Australian Tourism Commission (released September 2025) states that international visitors account for 6% of South Australia’s total visitor numbers but contribute 16% of total visitor expenditure. This demonstrates an outsized economic impact from overseas markets. Concentrating lift from major Asian gateways like Hong Kong can therefore disproportionately grow tourism spend relative to headcount. This demand profile aligns with Adelaide Airport’s capacity growth and the reintroduction of a thrice-weekly Hong Kong link.

According to Cathay Pacific’s official "About us" and alliance pages, the airline is Hong Kong’s flag carrier and a founding member of the oneworld alliance. The Cathay Group's passenger airlines serve roughly 80–100 destinations across Asia, the Pacific, Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Africa. Company releases further note a multiyear investment program well in excess of HK$100 billion covering fleet, lounges, and new cabin products to bolster Hong Kong’s hub status. These attributes indicate the network depth and capital commitment underpinning seasonal expansion such as Hong Kong–Adelaide.
