Virgin Atlantic has announced a leadership change, with Shai Weiss set to step down as Chief Executive Officer at the end of this year. Corneel Koster will take over the role on January 1, following more than nine years at the airline in various positions.

Weiss became CEO in January 2019 and led Virgin Atlantic through significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and a fleet modernization program. Under his leadership, the airline returned to profitability and achieved record performance levels. The company also reported high customer satisfaction among transatlantic carriers.

Virgin Atlantic founder Sir Richard Branson expressed appreciation for Weiss’s tenure: "I’m delighted to welcome Corneel as CEO. He embodies the Virgin spirit - bold, curious, and ready to shake up the status quo. We look forward to this exciting new chapter."

Corneel Koster first joined Virgin Atlantic in September 2010 as Director of Operations, Safety & Security after working in cargo and ground services roles at KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. He left Virgin after three years for senior positions at Aeromexico and Delta Air Lines before returning in August 2019 as Chief Customer Officer and later Chief Customer & Operating Officer.

During his time back at Virgin Atlantic, Koster played a key role in helping the airline recover from the pandemic. His work included overseeing initiatives such as introducing award-winning Airbus A330neo aircraft and advancing digital operational transformation.

Peter Norris, Chair of Virgin Atlantic, commented on Koster’s appointment: "As a true customer champion, he understands what sets Virgin Atlantic apart as we continue to challenge the status quo in the years ahead." Outgoing CEO Shai Weiss added that he "can think of no one better to take over," noting that Koster "will continue to innovate for our people."

Looking ahead, Koster stated that "Virgin Atlantic [will remain] the airline that dares to do things differently." The airline plans further fleet modernization with an order for 16 additional Airbus A330-900s (https://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news/133872-virgin-atlantic-to-add-sixteen-a330neos-report).

The carrier is also expected to introduce new technology such as Starlink WiFi service for passengers.
