United Airlines is set to operate more Boeing 757 flights to Europe during the summer of 2026 than it has in any year since 2017. This increase is primarily due to the introduction of a new route between Washington Dulles and Keflavik, Iceland, which will commence on May 22, 2026. The move will put United in direct competition with Icelandair on this route, after PLAY ceased its service to Dulles last year.

The airline’s fleet of Boeing 757-200s, originally acquired from Continental Airlines, averages nearly 29 years old. While these aircraft require more fuel and maintenance compared to newer models such as the incoming Airbus A321XLRs, they are fully paid off and therefore less expensive for the airline to operate.

Data from Cirium Diio shows that United has scheduled approximately 558 one-way Boeing 757 flights across the Atlantic for July 2026. This figure represents an increase of almost six percent compared to July of the previous year and a rise of thirty-eight percent compared to July 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic. These flights will account for about seventeen percent of United’s total European services during that month.

Sixteen airport pairs are scheduled for peak summer next year, up from fifteen in July 2025. The only new addition is the Washington Dulles-Keflavik route. Other notable services include new routes from Newark to Faro and Bilbao in Southern Europe, which began in May and June of 2025 respectively.

On some routes such as Newark-Porto, United will operate two daily flights. TAP Air Portugal also serves Newark-Porto daily using Airbus A321LR aircraft as part of its effort to build up operations in Porto. Delta Air Lines plans to enter the Greater New York City-Porto market as well with daily New York JFK-Porto flights using a Boeing 767-300ER starting May 21, 2026.

United’s longest scheduled European Boeing 757 flight next July will remain Newark to Stockholm Arlanda at roughly 3,415 nautical miles each way. This is currently the world’s longest scheduled passenger service using a Boeing 757. Despite SAS moving from Star Alliance to SkyTeam in September 2024, it continues serving Newark with six weekly flights on an Airbus A330-300 throughout the year. United’s own operation on this route remains seasonal.

"United will depart from Dulles for Keflavik on May 22, 2026. When it does, the market will then have two operators for the first time since PLAY pulled out in 2024. Moreover, now that Icelandair deploys the 737 MAX 8/MAX 9, it will be the first time it has seen the 757 since 2022. United's offering will mean more options for passengers connecting from across the US to reach the ever-popular Iceland."
