British Airways continues to expand its long-haul operations with the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, serving some of the airline’s longest nonstop routes from London Heathrow in 2025. The 787-9 has become a key part of the British Airways fleet, which, as of October 2025, includes 253 active aircraft and another 77 on order. Alongside the Dreamliner family, the carrier operates a mix of Airbus and Boeing widebody aircraft and expects further growth with up to 24 Boeing 777X jets once certified.

The introduction of the Boeing 787 to British Airways dates back to an order placed in 2007 for 24 Dreamliners and 12 Airbus A380s. The first 787 was delivered in June 2013 and entered service on September 1 of that year, initially flying between London Heathrow and Toronto Pearson International Airport. Since then, British Airways has expanded Dreamliner operations across its global network.

Currently, the airline operates all three variants of the Boeing 787: twelve 787-8s (in two configurations), eighteen 787-9s (all with older style seating), and twelve 787-10s, with another thirty-eight -10s on order. The Dreamliners are deployed on a range of long-haul routes from London Heathrow.

The longest nonstop route operated by British Airways with the Boeing 787-9 is between London Heathrow and Santiago Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport in Chile. This route covers a distance of 7,227 miles (11,563 km) and will see 172 flights in 2025, offering over 37,000 seats. British Airways remains the only carrier providing direct flights between the UK and Chile.

Singapore Changi International Airport is the second-longest route for British Airways’ 787-9 fleet in 2025. Covering a distance of 6,764 miles (10,822 km), there will be a total of 258 flights operated by this aircraft type throughout the year. Singapore’s status as a major financial hub ensures high demand for these services.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport ranks third among British Airways’ longest Dreamliner routes at 6,593 miles (10,548 km). The airline plans to operate this route with both the Boeing 787-9 and other widebody aircraft in a total of 306 flights during the year.

Other notable long-haul destinations served by British Airways’ Boeing 787-9 include Hong Kong International Airport (5,995 miles; nearly thirteen hours flight time), Cape Town International Airport in South Africa (5,994 miles), Tokyo Haneda Airport in Japan (5,974 miles), Shanghai Pudong International Airport in China (5,775 miles), and Mexico City International Airport (5,541 miles).

Competition on these routes varies by destination. For example, direct flights from London to Santiago are unique to British Airways; however, other European airlines such as Air France and Iberia serve Santiago from their respective hubs. On routes like Singapore and Hong Kong, British Airways faces competition from local carriers including Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific.

British Airways’ deployment of the Boeing 787-9 on these extended routes reflects ongoing efforts to connect London Heathrow with key cities worldwide using modern widebody aircraft.
