Lufthansa is preparing to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026 by organizing an exhibition at its conference center in Frankfurt. The event will feature two vintage airliners, including the Junkers Ju 52, which recently arrived in Frankfurt after being restored and used for leisure flights.

The Junkers Ju 52 first entered service with Lufthansa in 1932 and became a significant part of the airline's fleet during the interwar period. The specific aircraft on display, registered as D-AQUI, was later used for sightseeing flights after its commercial service ended. It underwent restoration in the mid-1980s and carried more than 250,000 passengers before retiring in 2018.

Lufthansa described the aircraft as "valued for its efficiency and reliability," adding that it is "a symbol of pioneering spirit, engineering excellence, and the fascination of flight." The airline also stated: "Its robust design and ability to land on unpaved runways made it a byword for reliability and innovation. Today, the Ju 52 is considered a cult aircraft that continues to thrill aviation fans."

The Ju 52 is recognized for its three-engine configuration and corrugated metal fuselage. Lufthansa noted that despite its simple appearance, it gained popularity due to its dependability. The aircraft played roles in both civil and military aviation during the 1930s and World War II, with nearly 5,000 units produced across Germany, France, and Spain.

After retiring from sightseeing operations, D-AQUI was restored by the Quax Association at Paderborn Lippstadt Airport. Lufthansa held a farewell ceremony for the aircraft in Paderborn before transferring it to Frankfurt for the upcoming exhibition.

Starting spring 2026, Lufthansa plans to display the restored Junkers Ju 52 alongside a Lockheed Super Star at its Conference and Visitor Center near Frankfurt Airport. Both planes will be visible through a glass facade. Lufthansa stated that "an open gallery will feature numerous exhibits from Lufthansa’s corporate history, many of which will be on public display for the first time." The facility will also be available for external event organizers.

The Lockheed Super Star arrived in Frankfurt earlier this year with new paintwork ahead of the anniversary celebrations. Restoration work on this aircraft is ongoing as preparations continue for next year's centenary events.
