Icelandair is set to launch a new route between its Keflavik hub and Miami, beginning on October 25. This service will mark the airline's longest scheduled flight by time, with a maximum block time of 8 hours and 40 minutes. The route will operate three times per week using the Airbus A321LR, which is Icelandair’s highest-capacity narrowbody aircraft.

The introduction of this route coincides with the switch to winter schedules by northern carriers, which takes effect on October 26 in accordance with IATA slot seasons. The Miami service is notable as it will be only the second time scheduled passenger flights have connected South Florida and Iceland. The previous connection was operated by WOW Air during 2017/2018 with Airbus A330-300s before the airline ceased operations.

Unlike WOW Air’s widebody jets, Icelandair’s flights will use the smaller and more cost-effective A321LR. The aircraft features 187 seats: 22 in SAGA Premium class and 165 in economy. According to ch-aviation, Icelandair currently operates four A321LRs, with plans to lease two additional units.

The flight schedule includes departures from Keflavik on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays (FI691), arriving in Miami at 20:55 local time. Return flights (FI690) depart Miami on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 17:15 local time and arrive in Keflavik at 05:55 the following day. Due to the long stage length, aircraft will remain overnight in Miami to facilitate connections across Europe.

When launched, this route will surpass Icelandair’s Orlando service as its longest by scheduled block time. It also marks the first time Icelandair will serve two airports in Florida simultaneously.

Historically, only one longer scheduled passenger operation by block time has been operated by Icelandair—to San Francisco—using Boeing 767-300ERs with up to an 8 hour and 55 minute duration. The airline anticipates introducing A321XLRs toward the end of the decade for potential future long-haul routes.

During the winter schedule from October 26 through March 28, the A321LR will also operate other North American routes including Seattle—where it is set to fly daily through late March before increasing frequency further in spring. After May, New York JFK and Newark are expected to become primary destinations for this aircraft type.
