Alaska Airlines Flight 1057, operating from Portland International Airport to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, diverted to Boise, Idaho, on Tuesday after a passenger allegedly assaulted two flight attendants. Police identified the passenger as 61-year-old Tracy Brkhimer of White Salmon, Washington. According to authorities, Brkhimer exhibited erratic behavior and struck the crew members as they attempted to calm her.

After being restrained by the crew, Brkhimer was removed from the aircraft upon landing in Boise and booked into Ada County Jail. She faces two misdemeanor battery charges, has posted a $600 cash bond, and is scheduled for a court appearance in November. Alaska Airlines has permanently banned her from flying with the carrier.

According to CBS News reports, the incident was categorized as a "security incident," prompting the diversion. The crew filed a citizen's arrest after landing, and medics cleared the flight to continue after about a 90-minute delay.

Alaska Airlines reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for violence against employees. The airline is expected to file reports that may lead to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) civil penalties and Department of Justice referrals, emphasizing its commitment to safety and support for crews and unions. Internally, Alaska Airlines will review de-escalation protocols and incident reporting procedures.

The incident is considered isolated and is not expected to have significant financial or customer relationship impacts for Alaska Airlines. However, it underscores ongoing challenges with cabin disruptions since the COVID-19 pandemic. The FAA reported more than 1,200 unruly passenger cases in 2024 alone, with civil penalties reaching over $37,000. Similar incidents have affected other airlines recently, including Southwest Airlines and United Airlines flights that required diversions or resulted in arrests.

Alaska Airlines' prompt response—including restraining the passenger, ensuring medical clearance for the crew, and cooperating with local law enforcement—aims to maintain customer trust and reinforce its commitment to cabin safety.
