Delta Air Lines has announced a new initiative to plant 1,000 trees in Los Angeles as part of the countdown to the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The effort is being launched in partnership with TreePeople, a local environmental organization, and aims to complete the tree planting ahead of the opening ceremonies in 2028.

The announcement comes as Los Angeles marks 1,000 days until it hosts the Olympic Games for the third time and the Paralympic Games for the first time. Delta, which serves as both the Official Airline of Team USA and an inaugural Founding Partner of LA28, held a celebratory event with TreePeople to begin this project. The event included participation from more than 50 Delta employees, community members, LA leaders, and Olympian Brenda Villa.

“As we count down to the LA28 Games, Delta’s 4,500 Los Angeles–based employees are getting ready to welcome the world to our city,” said Scott Santoro, Delta’s Vice President of Los Angeles and West Coast Sales. “Los Angeles isn’t just a destination on our route map—it’s home, and on the road to LA28, we’re proud to continue efforts to showcase a city that’s not only a global gateway, but a community we’re committed to strengthening for years to come.”

TreePeople Chairman John D. Bunzel added: “TreePeople is thrilled to partner with Delta to grow a positive, lasting legacy for LA28. By planting 1,000 trees in 1,000 days, we’re not just preparing the city to welcome the world in 2028—we’re investing in cleaner air, cooler streets and stronger communities for generations to come.”

The tree planting took place at Jackie Tatum Harvard Recreation Center in South Los Angeles. According to organizers, these native and climate-resilient trees will provide shade and help improve air quality for local residents. In addition to planting trees at public sites like parks and schoolyards across Los Angeles County—a mission TreePeople has pursued for over five decades—the October 17 event also included distributing fruit trees directly to families living in South LA.

Delta’s broader engagement in Southern California includes partnerships with more than two dozen organizations focused on education initiatives, workforce development programs, hunger relief efforts such as those led by Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, sustainability projects including AltaSea collaborations at Port of Los Angeles (https://altasea.org/), Junior Achievement of Southern California (https://jasocal.org/), YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles (https://www.ymcala.org/), as well as sponsorships with major sports teams like the LA Kings and Lakers at Crypto.com Arena (https://www.cryptoarena.com/).

Delta recently expanded its network out of LAX by announcing new routes—including service between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Hong Kong plus Chicago starting June 2026—making it currently the largest global carrier at LAX by seats offered and daily departures.

The airline says it will continue its role as Official Airline Carrier for Team USA during LA28 while maintaining its commitment toward local communities through volunteerism and support initiatives.
