Russia’s largest airline, Aeroflot, is reportedly preparing to dismantle six Boeing 737s and two Boeing 747s to use their parts for the maintenance of its active fleet. The move comes amid ongoing Western sanctions that have limited Russia’s access to aircraft components and technical support.
According to a report by AeroTime, the eight Boeing aircraft will be transferred from Volga-Dnepr to Aeroflot under a contract estimated at approximately ten billion Russian Rubles, or about $130 million. The dismantling process is expected to help Aeroflot maintain its operational capacity by supplying spare parts for other Boeing aircraft in its fleet.
The ongoing sanctions have created significant challenges for Russian airlines, making it difficult to obtain replacement parts and maintain Western-built aircraft. As a result, carriers like Aeroflot have had to find alternative ways to keep their planes airworthy, including cannibalizing existing aircraft for parts.
