Two United Airlines aircraft were involved in a ground collision at Chicago O'Hare International Airport on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred when a Boeing 737-700, arriving from Jackson Hole, struck the horizontal stabilizer of a parked Boeing 767 while taxiing to its gate. The 737-700 was carrying 113 passengers and five crew members at the time, while the 767 was empty.

Pictures posted on social media showed the 737's wingtip lodged under the 767's left horizontal stabilizer. Passengers reported being largely unaware of the collision, although some felt a "shuddering" as the aircraft separated. Bill Marcus, a passenger on board, said he did not feel the initial impact but noticed the movement afterward.

United Airlines confirmed the incident in a statement: "On Friday afternoon, UA2652 was taxiing to its arrival gate when it made contact with the horizontal stabilizer of another United aircraft. Passengers deplaned normally and no injuries were reported. The other aircraft was stationary, and no passengers were onboard."

Following the collision, passengers remained on the 737 for just under an hour before deplaning. Both aircraft were inspected, and no major damage was found, though flight data shows that the 737 remains grounded in Chicago nearly a day later. The 26-year-old 737-700, registered as N21723, was originally delivered to Continental Airlines in 1999 and joined United's fleet after a merger in 2010. The registration of the 767 involved has not been disclosed, and its current condition is unknown. United Airlines operates one of the largest fleets of Boeing 767s for passenger flights, second only to Delta Air Lines.

The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into the incident.

This event adds to a series of ground collisions at major US airports in recent months. Earlier this month, two Delta regional jets collided at New York's LaGuardia Airport, resulting in a flight attendant injury. In previous months, similar minor collisions involving United aircraft occurred at San Francisco International Airport. These incidents have drawn attention to ongoing staffing shortages among air traffic controllers at major US airports, including Chicago O'Hare, which has one of the most complex operational environments in the country due to its eight active runways.

The FAA has announced plans to hire thousands of new air traffic controllers in the coming years, but current staffing levels remain below targets.
