Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) will close Terminal 5 on October 28 as part of a major modernization effort ahead of the 2028 Olympics. The terminal will be demolished and rebuilt, representing a $200 million portion of the airport’s $30 billion Capital Improvement Program.

During construction, a new satellite terminal will be used to help manage passenger traffic for airlines affected by the closure. American Airlines, Spirit Airlines, and JetBlue will relocate their operations: JetBlue services will move to Terminal 1 and American Airlines to Terminal 4 on the day of closure, while Spirit Airlines will shift to Terminal 2 on October 29.

Doug Webster, Chief Airport Operations Officer for Los Angeles World Airports, said: “As we take this important step toward transforming LAX, the closure of Terminal 5 marks a pivotal moment in our journey to deliver a world-class airport experience.”

The redesigned T5 is planned as a modern facility with centralized ticketing, screening, and baggage claim areas featuring advanced equipment. The project includes expanded amenities and direct access to the Automated People Mover train system. A new “Terminal Vertical Core” will provide centralized escalator and elevator access between floors and connect directly to the West Central Terminal Area APM station. T5 will also link with T4 via a new $115-million connector that leads to the Tom Bradley International Terminal.

Once completed, the unified T4/T5 structure will cover more than 300,000 square feet and feature 30 gates. The design includes a glass front facade with mid-century modern elements and increased natural lighting. All passenger spaces and restrooms are being rebuilt with updated finishes and amenities. Security efficiency is expected to improve with the addition of 16 security lanes.

Inside the terminals, travelers can expect more power outlets as well as enhanced dining and retail options. The improvements aim to reduce congestion through increased capacity and better access to transit systems like the Automated People Mover. Both north and south concourses are set for upgrades; two gates serving international and domestic flights will be rebuilt, along with an updated Customs and Border Protection Federal Inspection Station.

The T4 connector—a CAL Green Certified space—will include checked baggage inspection systems, an interline baggage transfer facility, and a four-lane passenger security checkpoint.

Construction is being managed by Hensel Phelps, which specializes in large-scale projects including airports across California. Design partners include PGAL for T4 and Gensler for the vertical core. Turner Construction and Corgan collaborated on building the four-story Bradley West Terminal 4 Connector.

A public plaza with outdoor seating is among several modern features included in the plans. Project leaders aim for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver certification from the US Green Building Council for key parts of the development.
