SWISS has expanded its long-haul Airbus A350 operations to North America, following the delivery of its first A350 aircraft, registered as HB-IFA, on October 9. The airline has been conducting crew training with this aircraft in Taranto, Southern Italy.

According to Cirium Diio data, SWISS will begin using the A350 for short-haul flights starting October 25 to allow for additional crew familiarization. The first long-haul service is scheduled for November 20 from Zurich to Boston. In a recent update, SWISS announced that the A350 will also operate flights to Montreal beginning February 23.

SWISS has ordered ten A350-900s, each configured with 242 seats across four classes: three first-class suites (including one suite for two people), 45 business class seats, 38 premium economy seats, and 156 economy seats. This configuration is based on SWISS Senses (similar to Allegris but under SWISS branding).

The new aircraft will fly five times weekly between Zurich and Boston until March 28. On other days, the route will be served by a three-class A330-300 with 236 seats. The schedule for next summer has not yet been finalized.

Flight LX52 departs Zurich at 17:30 and arrives in Boston at either 20:00 or 20:20 local time. The return flight LX53 leaves Boston at either 21:50 or 22:10 and lands in Zurich at 11:10 the next day. In January, the A350 will operate exclusively on this route before frequencies are reduced and more flights are operated by the A330.

For Montreal, daily A350 service is planned from February 23 through March 28. After that date, current plans call for a return to exclusive use of the A330-300 on this route; however, these schedules may change again depending on operational needs.

The introduction of the A350 marks the first time since 2023 that equipment other than an A330 has operated between Zurich and Montreal—the last being an A340-300. With its larger capacity, the new aircraft provides more seats per flight than any model used in recent years.

Between March 1 and March 28, SWISS’s North American network includes ten routes from Switzerland to cities in both the US and Canada. During this period:

- Twice-daily flights connect Zurich with Miami (A330-300/777-300ER) and New York JFK (A330-300).

- Daily services run from Geneva to JFK (A330-300), Zurich to Boston (A330/A350), Chicago O'Hare (A330), Montreal (A350), Newark (A330), and San Francisco (777).

- Los Angeles receives near-daily service via a Boeing 777.

- Washington Dulles is served five times weekly by an A330.

Delta Air Lines recently withdrew from Geneva operations.

In total during early March through late March, SWISS plans up to 82 weekly departures to North America—accounting for about fifty-eight percent of all passenger services between Switzerland and US/Canada destinations during that timeframe. When including all Star Alliance operators flying these routes out of Switzerland, this share rises to ninety percent.
