American Airlines has established itself as the world's largest airline by number of hubs, operating ten across the United States. The company, headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, surpasses other major airlines in this regard.

Founded in 1936, American Airlines has grown through various acquisitions and is now one of the "Big Three" U.S. carriers. Its mainline fleet is supported by American Eagle, which provides regional and some domestic or trans-border services.

In 2024, American Airlines operated a fleet of over 1,000 aircraft and offered more than 275 million seats on domestic and international flights. The airline flew more than 2.1 million flights last year. According to ch-aviation data, the average age of its fleet is about 14 years.

The airline's international reach is expanded through partnerships with oneworld alliance members and other airlines such as Aer Lingus, Alaska Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Fiji Airways, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc and Porter Airlines.

American's fleet consists mainly of Boeing and Airbus narrowbody aircraft with an all-Boeing widebody segment. The carrier also has an order for 20 Boom Overture supersonic aircraft with options for an additional 40.

Maintenance operations are managed at four bases: Tulsa, Pittsburgh, Dallas/Fort Worth and Charlotte Douglas.

The ten hubs are distributed throughout the Northeast (New York JFK Airport [JFK], LaGuardia Airport [LGA], Philadelphia International Airport [PHL]), South (Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport [DFW], Miami International Airport [MIA], Charlotte Douglas International Airport [CLT], Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport [DCA]), Midwest (Chicago O'Hare International Airport [ORD]), and West (Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport [PHX], Los Angeles International Airport [LAX]).

At JFK airport in New York City, American holds a market share of about 12%, making it the third largest carrier after Delta Air Lines and JetBlue. At LaGuardia it operates about 21% of flights; at Philadelphia it controls approximately 46%. Philadelphia serves as its primary Northeastern hub for European routes.

Dallas/Fort Worth is American’s largest hub with a market share around 66%. Miami acts as its main gateway to Latin America with a market share near 57%. Charlotte Douglas accounts for roughly 69% of flights at that airport while Ronald Reagan Washington National handles about 27%.

In Chicago O’Hare—its only Midwest hub—American holds about a 22% market share compared to United’s dominant position but still offers both domestic and international routes from there.

On the West Coast at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), American has a market share around 31%, while at Los Angeles International (LAX) it operates about 15% of all flights.

American Eagle supports these operations through wholly owned subsidiaries Envoy Air, PSA Airlines and Piedmont Airlines as well as third-party carriers Republic Airways and SkyWest. The combined group offers more than 6,800 daily flights to over 350 destinations in 48 countries worldwide using a mix of Embraer E-Jets and Bombardier CRJs among others; more than half the overall fleet is operated by American Eagle with over 544 active aircraft according to ch-aviation data.
