Marie Owens Thomsen Senior Vice President Sustainability & Chief Economist | International Air Transport Association - IATA

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has launched the Integrated Sustainability Program (ISP), a new initiative aimed at helping airlines manage and certify their sustainability efforts. The program includes certification, training, consulting, assessments, guidance, and tools across four main areas: environmental management, sustainable procurement, social responsibility, and sustainability performance.

Airlines can pursue ISP certifications in individual modules or as part of a comprehensive program. Each certification is subject to independent assessment every two years.

Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s Senior Vice President for Sustainability and Chief Economist, said: “The comprehensive ISP certification program validates that an airline is managing its sustainability efforts at the highest level and in the broadest context. It does this by integrating the monitoring of environmental, social, and governance measures and providing all stakeholders, regulators, and customers with a transparent view of the progress. This comes with the added value of being designed for airlines’ specific needs, making ISP a practical framework to inform decision-making while ensuring that airlines’ efforts are aligned with global best practices.”

The four modules offered by ISP include:

- Environmental Management: Incorporates ISO14001:2015 principles through IEnvA to help organizations systematically assess their environmental impact.

- Sustainable Procurement: Introduces ISO20400:2017-aligned standards to aviation for evaluating supply chain sustainability.

- Social Responsibility: Integrates international guidelines such as ISO26000:2010 and UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights into a certifiable framework.

- Sustainability Performance: Provides tools for measuring and reporting on environmental, social, and governance performance.

At the launch event, Air New Zealand and EVA Air were announced as the first carriers to receive Sustainable Procurement certification under ISP.

Kiri Hannifin, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer at Air New Zealand said: “As New Zealand’s national airline, we’ve always had a responsibility to help our people and communities thrive. For Air New Zealand, sustainable procurement means building on the collective strength and innovation of our supplier network, and working together to create better outcomes for people and the planet. By backing IATA’s new ISP, we want to play our part to help lift standards across aviation, and demonstrate that doing what’s right is about doing good business.”

Jason Liu, Chief Sustainability Officer at EVA Air said: “Earning this certification marks a key milestone in EVA Air’s sustainability journey, reflecting our commitment to integrating sustainability into procurement and collaborating with partners to build a more resilient supply chain.”

Currently available only to airlines, IATA plans for future expansion of ISP certifications to other sectors such as ground handlers, cargo handlers, airports, maintenance organizations (MROs), and caterers.
