Boeing has received a contract from the US Army to deliver nine CH-47F Block II Chinook helicopters, with the deal valued at $461 million. The contract, announced on October 21, 2025, covers production Lots Four and Five and increases the total number of Block II Chinooks under contract to 18.

The CH-47F Block II Chinook remains a key part of the Army’s heavy-lift helicopter fleet, used for transporting troops, cargo, and supporting special operations in demanding environments. Boeing’s delivery of the Block II variant reflects ongoing demand for upgrades and support aligned with the Army's aviation strategy.

The contract is structured into two parts, Lot Four and Lot Five, and will run alongside the Army’s larger plan to modernize its heavy-lift helicopter fleet. The Army’s strategy involves gradually fielding the latest version of the CH-47F. The Block II model includes updates such as improved avionics and structural enhancements over previous versions.

For Boeing, this order demonstrates the continued importance of the Chinook in military operations, even as other aircraft types like unmanned systems and tilt-rotor aircraft gain attention. The company faces pressure to meet expectations for reliability and cost-effectiveness to secure future contracts. Recent years have seen Boeing struggle with production quality and deadlines, making the success of this order significant for its reputation.

The Army’s acquisition of additional Chinooks supports its priorities in multi-domain operations and rapid deployment. Heavy-lift helicopters are critical for moving equipment and personnel in challenging environments. The CH-47F Block II’s long range and high payload capacity are important as the Army responds to evolving global threats.

Boeing’s military contracts provide steady revenue, which is particularly important when other divisions, such as commercial aviation, experience slowdowns or financial issues. The company must continue to show strong cost control and delivery performance to maintain its position as a supplier for military aircraft.

The Chinook helicopter has a long history with the US military. Originally designed by Vertol and entering service in 1962, it has been used extensively by the Army, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve. Over 1,200 Chinooks have been built, and Boeing has exported the helicopter to multiple countries. The aircraft has seen action in combat and disaster relief and has also been adapted for civilian use.

The CH-47F Block II is the latest version, with its first flight occurring in 2024. The Army plans for a future Block III upgrade and expects the Chinook to remain in service beyond the 2060s. If realized, this would make the Chinook one of the longest-serving aircraft types in US military history, potentially exceeding 100 years of service.
