Wizz Air is reportedly in talks with Airbus to delay the delivery of about 100 new aircraft, potentially pushing these orders into the next decade. The Hungarian low-cost airline currently has nearly 300 narrowbody jets on order from the European manufacturer but has experienced a slowdown in its growth and expansion plans.

Sources cited by Bloomberg, who requested anonymity due to the private nature of the discussions, said that Wizz Air's negotiations with Airbus involve deferring deliveries originally scheduled between now and 2030. One source indicated that any agreement is still weeks away from being finalized, referencing recent comments made by Ian Malin, Wizz Air’s Chief Financial Officer. According to Bloomberg, if these deferrals go ahead, Wizz Air's capacity growth would be limited to 10% instead of the planned 14%.

The airline has already adjusted some of its orders this year, including changes related to the Airbus A321XLR model. Nearly a quarter of Wizz Air’s next-generation fleet is currently grounded due to ongoing engine issues.

Wizz Air operates an all-Airbus fleet and has faced significant challenges with Pratt & Whitney engines powering its latest aircraft models. Inspections and repairs caused by a manufacturing defect in the PW1000G engine have led to grounding almost a quarter of its A321neo fleet. These issues are expected to persist until at least the end of 2027.

In response to operational difficulties and strategic changes—including closing its Abu Dhabi-based subsidiary—Wizz Air has also reduced its order for A321XLRs from more than 40 units down to just 10-15 aircraft. The remaining orders will be shifted toward other variants within Airbus’ single-aisle lineup.

Currently, according to ch-aviation data, Wizz Air’s active fleet includes 141 narrowbody jets averaging just over eight years old: 17 A320-200s, 33 A321-200s, and 91 next-generation A321neos. The carrier still holds outstanding orders for another 276 aircraft—234 standard A321neos and up to 42 A321XLRs before planned reductions—which could nearly triple its current fleet size upon completion.

Simple Flying has reached out to both Wizz Air and Airbus for further comment on these developments and will provide updates as new information becomes available.
