American Airlines has announced that it will upgrade its Boeing 777-200ER aircraft with new Flagship Suites, the airline's latest business-class product. The company revealed on Thursday that these planes, which are among the oldest in American's long-haul fleet, will receive a comprehensive cabin renovation.

The 777-200ER is a key aircraft for American Airlines, operating more long-haul routes than any other plane in its fleet. The planned upgrades include installing the Flagship Suites with sliding privacy doors and adding new seatback entertainment systems. This change will increase the number of lie-flat and premium economy seats by 25%, according to executives who spoke during the company's third-quarter earnings call. Currently, each 777-200ER has 37 lie-flat business-class pods and 24 premium economy recliners.

American first introduced its Flagship Suites on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners in June and plans to feature them on upcoming Airbus A321XLR aircraft as well as retrofitting newer Boeing 777-300ERs. The move is seen as an effort to match competitors such as Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, which have invested heavily in premium seating options.

"We're interested in providing a service for our customers and meeting demand," said Steve Johnson, American's vice chair and chief strategy officer, during a conference call on Thursday.

As these cabin upgrades are completed, passengers flying internationally on American's busiest routes can expect an improved onboard experience.
