Alaska Airlines halted all departures nationwide on Thursday evening due to a technology outage, causing disruptions across its network. The issue, which began shortly after 7:20 p.m. EDT, affected both Alaska's mainline flights and those operated by its regional subsidiary Horizon Air.

A spokesperson confirmed that Hawaiian Airlines, although under the same parent company as Alaska, was not impacted by the outage since it operates as a separate brand.

The disruption threatened to cause delays at several major West Coast hubs, including Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego. In a statement posted to social media, Alaska Airlines said: "We apologize for the inconvenience. If you're scheduled to fly tonight, please check your flight status before heading to the airport."

The airline's mobile app displayed a message late Thursday indicating ongoing technology problems affecting its systems. While the exact number of affected flights was not immediately clear, extended ground stops have the potential to create continued delays into Friday.

In response to the situation, Alaska Airlines issued a travel waiver late Thursday. This allowed passengers scheduled to travel on Thursday or Friday to rebook their flights for any day between Thursday and Monday without penalty.

Passengers experiencing cancellations or significant delays are eligible for refunds if they choose not to fly with Alaska Airlines instead of accepting rebooking options. U.S. Department of Transportation policies guarantee these rights (https://www.transportation.gov/individuals/aviation-consumer-protection/refunds). Additionally, Alaska Airlines has outlined further accommodations for passengers during major disruptions caused by issues within its control—such as technology outages—which can be reviewed on the DOT's FlightRights.gov dashboard (https://www.flightrights.gov/).
