Rajendra Kumar Acharya UNI Asia & Pacific Regional Secretary | UNI Global Union

The Rastriya Mazdoor Sangh (RMS), affiliated with UNI Global Union, has made progress in securing social protection for private security workers in Pune. The union’s organizing campaign has led to the registration of security guards under the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). This registration provides health services and financial support for sickness, maternity, disability, and work-related injuries for both workers and their families.

Security personnel from the Pune District Security Guard Board have officially joined RMS. The union is also working to organize security guards at companies such as G4S in Pune. These efforts are part of a broader movement by RMS to increase union membership among private security workers throughout Maharashtra.

RMS’s activities align with the government’s Scheme for Promotion of Registration of Employers and Employees (SPREE 2025), which aims to encourage more unorganized and contract workers to register through ESIC. By assisting security guards with registration and informing them about their rights under this Ministry of Labour and Employment initiative, RMS is helping more private security workers gain access to institutional social protection.

On October 7, 2025, RMS held an outreach session on ESIC benefits for contract security guards employed by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The event was opened by PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram and attended by Sukanta Das, Regional Director of ESIC Pune, along with other officials. Their participation highlighted official support for extending social protection to contract workers.

Sunil Shinde, President of RMS, stated: “Our goal is to recruit 2,000 security guards into the union. So far, we have already recruited 500 through this campaign.”

Rajendra Acharya, UNI Asia & Pacific Regional Secretary, commented: “The progress in Pune shows that with united organizing and a clear vision, workers’ rights and welfare can be greatly improved. UNI Asia & Pacific remains fully committed to supporting such efforts across the region.“
