Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has announced the closure of Terminal 5 to commence significant renovations aimed at enhancing the passenger experience. During this period, several airlines will temporarily relocate to other terminals.

According to Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), the Terminals 4 and 5 program will involve a complete renewal of Terminal 5 and the creation of a central headhouse. This headhouse will provide a direct connection to the LAX Automated People Mover, intended to streamline check-in, security, and baggage flows. LAWA states that this work is part of a multi-year capital improvement effort in preparation for major events in the region. Local coverage from ABC7 indicates that the goal is to create a more comfortable and modern travel experience while construction temporarily shifts airline operations.

The Midfield Satellite Concourse South (MSC South) offers eight additional gates in approximately 150,000 square feet to help maintain capacity during Terminal 5’s closure, according to LAWA’s project brief. Project contractor WE O’Neil provides further details on the two-story layout and innovative offsite construction and relocation methods used to expedite delivery. Urbanize LA previously reported that the concourse aims for late-2025 completion with LEED Silver aspirations, reinforcing its role in broader modernization efforts.

Airline relocations are being phased to ensure continued operations: JetBlue will move to Terminal 1, Spirit Airlines to Terminal 2, and American Airlines to Terminal 4, as per LAWA’s official announcement. The same release lists move dates starting the week of the closure to manage passenger continuity and staffing. ABC7’s report echoes these assignments and advises travelers to verify terminals before arriving due to ongoing construction changes.

Los Angeles International Airport is owned and operated by Los Angeles World Airports and ranks among the busiest airports in the United States. According to Wikipedia's overview, it serves as a major international gateway with extensive domestic and global networks across multiple airlines. It situates LAX within the City of Los Angeles under LAWA's governance.
