Manchester Airport, the third-busiest in the United Kingdom, offers several nonstop flight options to the United States. While no US legacy carriers currently operate these routes due to lower travel demand, international airlines have stepped in to fill the gap.

Singapore Airlines and Aer Lingus are among the non-UK carriers providing nonstop flights from Manchester to US destinations. Singapore Airlines operates a fifth-freedom route between Manchester and Houston’s George Bush International Airport. This service allows United Airlines MileagePlus members to book with miles, offering certain benefits for elite status travelers.

Aer Lingus has introduced new routes post-pandemic, including nonstop flights from Manchester to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Orlando International Airport. These services offer passengers additional connectivity options.

Virgin Atlantic remains the largest transatlantic carrier at Manchester Airport, complementing its London Heathrow hub with flights to four US destinations: Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport, Orlando International Airport, and seasonal services to Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport.

The airline’s decision to operate out of Manchester is influenced by several factors. The city is a significant economic hub in the UK, attracting business travelers particularly on routes like Manchester-New York. Additionally, leisure travel demand makes flights to destinations like Las Vegas and Orlando attractive propositions.

Virgin Atlantic also benefits from partnerships with Delta Air Lines through their SkyTeam alliance, allowing for ticket sales across partner networks and increasing passenger numbers on Virgin’s flights.

Manchester serves as a secondary hub for Virgin Atlantic within the UK market, targeting travelers from Northern England and Wales who might otherwise need to connect through London for direct US flights. This strategy helps Virgin maintain diverse operations and strengthens its nationwide presence compared to British Airways’ primarily London-based operations.

Overall, Manchester’s global connections in finance, technology, and manufacturing industries contribute to its appeal as a base for transatlantic services by airlines such as Virgin Atlantic.
