Virgin Atlantic announced on Apr. 12 that it will bring forward the launch of its Starlink Wi-Fi connectivity, with the first equipped flight now scheduled for May. The airline had previously planned to introduce Starlink during the third quarter of this year, but accelerated its timeline following British Airways’ recent deployment of the technology.

The decision marks a shift in in-flight connectivity among UK carriers and highlights competition in providing high-speed internet for passengers. Virgin Atlantic’s move comes as airlines seek to enhance passenger experience on key international routes.

According to Virgin Atlantic, the Airbus A350-1000 will be the first aircraft type in its fleet to receive Starlink equipment, with initial flights operating between London Heathrow and New York JFK. The airline plans to expand installation across its widebody fleet—including Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and Airbus A330-900s—by the end of 2027. British Airways became the first UK carrier to operate a flight with Starlink last month when it flew a Boeing 787-8 from London to Houston.

The introduction of free Starlink access on board is part of International Airline Group’s broader strategy for member airlines such as Iberia, Aer Lingus, LEVEL, and Vueling. While most passengers will have complimentary access, IAG’s low-cost carriers LEVEL and Vueling are approved to charge fees for onboard Wi-Fi due to cost considerations related to aircraft weight and aerodynamics.

Meanwhile, Delta Air Lines—Virgin Atlantic’s American partner—has chosen Amazon Leo instead of Starlink for its future in-flight connectivity services. Delta aims to install Amazon Leo systems on 500 aircraft starting in 2028; JetBlue is also planning installations beginning in 2027.
