American Airlines has conditionally purchased 100 hydrogen-electric engines from ZeroAvia, targeting regional jets as part of its goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This agreement builds on a memorandum of understanding signed between the two companies in 2022. The engines will generate electricity through hydrogen fuel, producing only water vapor as a byproduct.

ZeroAvia is currently developing a 20-seater hydrogen-powered aircraft and aims to create engines for larger regional aircraft such as the Bombardier CRJ700. Although financial details and conditions of the purchase remain undisclosed, it is anticipated that American Airlines is aiding in the engine's development, having previously supported ZeroAvia's Series C financing round in 2022.

Commenting on the agreement, American Airlines CEO Robert Isom stated, "Advancing the transition of commercial aviation to a low-carbon future requires investments in promising technologies, including alternate forms of propulsion. This announcement will help accelerate the development of technologies needed to power our industry and uphold our commitment to make American a sustainable airline so we can continue to deliver for customers for decades to come."

This partnership follows shortly after Universal Hydrogen, another company pursuing hydrogen-powered flights, ceased operations due to insufficient funding. Universal Hydrogen had aimed to retrofit hydrogen-electric engines on Silver Airways' aircraft but could not secure additional investment.

In contrast, Airbus is exploring a different approach with plans to launch a clean-sheet hydrogen-powered aircraft named ZEROe by 2028. While current efforts focus on regional flights using hydrogen technology, other solutions will be necessary for longer-haul zero-emission travel.
