The City of Prospect Heights and the Village of Wheeling have announced the dedication of a conference room at Chicago Executive Airport in honor of the late Nicholas J. Helmer. The announcement follows an Intergovernmental Agreement established on December 26, 1986, which requires the selection of a seven-member Board of Directors, with three members chosen from each municipality.

The Board Members of Chicago Executive Airport wish to recognize Mr. Helmer, who passed away on January 26, 2022. Mr. Helmer immigrated to the United States as a child from post-war Europe, served in the U.S. Army, and dedicated his life to public service.

Mr. Helmer was known for his roles as a husband, father, grandfather, friend, coach, mentor, public servant, and real estate developer. He represented the City of Prospect Heights as a Commissioner on the Chicago Executive Airport Board of Directors for fourteen years and served as Secretary during his tenure.

During his time on the board, Mr. Helmer supported efforts to modernize the airport by relocating Hintz Road at Wolf Road to create a larger runway safety area and planning and constructing the current air traffic control tower and Tower Road access road.

Mr. Helmer also served as Mayor of Prospect Heights and remained committed to the success of Chicago Executive Airport throughout his career. Additionally, he was a licensed pilot and an active member of the Palwaukee Airport Pilot’s Association.

He is survived by his wife Gail Anne (nee Mishlove) Helmer; children Nick Helmer Jr., Rebecca Jacob; grandchildren Kelly Ann Helmer, Kathryn Elizabeth Helmer, Nicholas Jacob, Jillian Jacob; sister Rosemarie Garlasco; brothers-in-law Robert and David Mishlove.

In recognition of Mr. Helmer's contributions and dedication to Chicago Executive Airport, the Chairman and Board of Directors have resolved that the conference room at Chicago Executive Airport Administration Office will be named The Mayor Nicholas J. Helmer Executive Conference Room.
