The results of last week's poll regarding the continuation of comments on AVweb have been tallied. Despite a narrow majority voting to turn off comments, the decision has been made to keep them active. This choice reflects a commitment to maintaining an open dialogue with readers, as well as recognizing the value that reader feedback brings to the publication.

"The irony is not lost on me that by ignoring the majority vote, I’m enabling the kind of discussion that allows at least some semblance of First Amendment basis for this publication’s existence," stated AVweb's editor.

The poll revealed a slim margin of 1.17 percent in favor of discontinuing comments. However, AVweb's editorial stance emphasizes the importance of direct communication with its audience. "Comments are easier," explained the editor. "They are the first thing I check in the morning and it’s almost always how we find out about the errors we make."

In addition to facilitating error correction, reader comments provide valuable insights and knowledge from a diverse group of individuals. "Our readers have such an incredible depth and breadth of knowledge and experience," noted the editor.

While acknowledging that some commenters may post extreme views or prejudices, AVweb plans to manage these challenges through community moderation tools available on a new platform called Discourse. The transition aims to enhance content moderation while involving commenters in maintaining civility.

"By far the majority of commenters are thoughtful and respectful," remarked the editor, emphasizing that it would be unfair to restrict their contributions due to a few disruptive individuals.

Political discussions remain a contentious issue within the comment section. However, AVweb maintains that politics is integral to aviation discourse and essential for informing readers about relevant government policies.

Despite accusations of bias, AVweb strives to distinguish between commentary and news content. "This blog and the comments are commentary and everything else on the page is news and that must remain neutral," clarified the editor.

Readers are encouraged to continue submitting comments and news tips, contributing to AVweb's community-driven approach centered around aviation.
