When someone arrives in town, the convenience of ride-sharing apps like Uber, Lyft, Grab, or Didi makes it easy to arrange transportation. However, picking someone up from the airport remains a significant act of care and effort. This gesture involves more driving and waiting time, signaling a deeper level of affection.

Airport pickups have become symbols of intimacy in popular culture. Movies and TV shows such as "When Harry Met Sally," "Seinfeld," and "Love Actually" depict these moments as expressions of love and care. In male relationships, picking someone up from the airport is comparable to helping them move.

There are several strategies for airport pickups:

1. **Cell phone waiting lot**: Wait for their call upon landing or monitor their flight status online. Approach the terminal when they are ready to be picked up. This method is known as “the drive by.”

2. **Pick up at departures**: Departures areas are often less crowded than arrivals. This strategy demonstrates expertise and capability, especially if no checked bags are involved. It is referred to as “the expert move.”

3. **Park and go inside the terminal**: Although more expensive and time-consuming due to parking costs, this approach allows for an earlier greeting and assistance with bags, showing next-level care. This method is termed “next level caring.”

4. **Meet them at their gate**: Post-9/11 security measures make this challenging but impactful. Some airports allow non-flyers through security with a gate pass or refundable ticket purchase for this purpose. Known as “the bold gesture,” it signifies a strong commitment.

The manner of greeting also reflects the relationship's nature—whether it’s a hug or handshake can convey different levels of intimacy.

Despite the efficiency of solo travel via ride-sharing services where one can work en route, declining an offer for an airport pickup may feel like rejecting the person rather than just the favor.
