They share stories from his military career and personal moments that highlight the impact he had on their lives. Howard, who passed away in March 2024 at the age of 100, was a respected figure in the aviation community for over 75 years.

Howard's aviation journey began with the Army Air Corps during World War II, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He led a crew of ten over enemy territory to capture images crucial for Allied campaigns in New Guinea and the Philippines. His contributions are commemorated with his photograph displayed in the Air and Space Museum's World War II exhibit in Washington D.C.

After his military service, Howard continued as a civilian pilot and small business owner. Friends and family remember him foremost as a friend and family man.

Dan Peterson, who met Howard through the Paragon Flying Club in the 1980s, cherished their 40-year friendship.

“Howard was such an intelligent, thoughtful, competent, caring pilot and person,” Dan said. “I really enjoyed getting to know him first in an instructor-pilot relationship but ultimately as a friend.”

Al Palicki also reflected on knowing Howard for more than four decades.

“When I met Howard there are certain traits that hit me – his perseverance, persistence, paying it forward, making a difference and giving back to the community,” Al explained.

Madeleine Monaco shared her memories of Howard’s generosity over their long friendship: “He was a very kind and generous man. I appreciated his generosity.”

Howard’s life was marked by acts of giving back. He served as a Medinah Shriner Aviator, transporting young burn victims and children with illnesses to medical facilities for treatment. He also participated in the Young Eagles program, introducing children to flight.

Dedicated to his family, Howard was married for 71 years and took pride in being a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Chairman Harris presented an airport spotlight award to honor Howard's legacy.

“There were three things that were important to Howard – family, family and family,” Al noted.

Throughout his career, Howard received numerous accolades including induction into the Illinois Aviation Hall of Fame and the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award. Remarkably at 84 years old, he passed his Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) exam.

Howard's influence remains strong within the local aviation community and especially among those at Chicago Executive Airport.

Continue to fly high, Howard.
