The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced the opening of a second sensory room at Newark Liberty International Airport’s Terminal A. This addition aims to enhance the airport experience for travelers with special needs, particularly those on the autism spectrum and other neurodivergent individuals. The announcement was made on March 25.

Situated beyond security screening, the new sensory room complements the existing pre-screening sensory room and TSA Cares services. The Port Authority stated, “The new post-security screening sensory room complements Terminal A’s existing pre-screening sensory room and assisted screening services through the TSA Cares program.” Designed as a peaceful refuge, these sensory rooms provide a calming environment in an otherwise overwhelming airport setting.

Kevin O’Toole, Chairman of the Port Authority, emphasized, “Newark International’s Terminal A has set a new standard for accessibility and comfort in air travel.” The sensory rooms are adorned with features such as a fish tank, interactive bubble tubes, and sea life projections to create an underwater ambiance, while including a simulated aircraft cabin to familiarize passengers with the boarding and in-flight experience.

Developed in collaboration with the Anderson Center for Autism, these facilities aim to positively impact passengers and their companions. Eliza Bozenski, Anderson Center’s Chief Development Officer, noted the significance of these spaces: “You’re giving them an opportunity to leave their homes, where they often feel very isolated, in the safest space they can stay in for a number of reasons.”

These initiatives are part of the Port Authority’s ongoing efforts to improve accessibility across its major airports. A new meditation room has also been introduced, further demonstrating the authority's commitment to inclusive travel.

Additionally, Jeffrey Lynford, Vice Chairman of the Port Authority, shared insights from personal experience: “These sensory rooms, and the care that went into designing them, can make the difference between a stressful journey and an empowering one.” The introduction of these features aims to provide an inclusive and comfortable travel experience for all passengers.
