Delta Air Lines faced significant operational challenges on Monday, canceling 1,153 flights or 29% of its operations and delaying another 45%. This followed a Sunday where 36% of flights were canceled and 44% delayed. By early Tuesday morning, over 10% of the day's flights had already been canceled.

The situation at Atlanta airport was particularly dire, with crowded terminals, long lines for customer service, and limited options for rental cars and hotels. Cole T. Lyle tweeted, "Mothers w/ small children on the floor in the terminal. Line for customer service is 1/2 mile long. No rental cars. Few hotel options. People’ve been stuck here 3 days."

Delta's CEO and Chief Information Officer informed employees that only crew tracking systems were malfunctioning and that they were running multiple systems in parallel to manage the situation. However, another major system failure occurred on Monday night, as reported by aviation watchdog JonNYC.

JonNYC tweeted about the outage: "..functions, we are unable to continue to work through open trips, plan flights, delay flights, etc. – TCC is engaged; more to follow as information is known – Travelport acknowledges an issue and is working to learn more – Bridge ongoing – If this is an extended outage .."

Delta communicated to employees that it would take until the weekend to recover operations but maintained a more optimistic public stance. They attributed the issues to an IT outage involving CrowdStrike that affected other airlines as well.

Kyle Potter highlighted Delta's communication issues: "After 15+ hour waits, Delta has stopped estimating how long it takes to get an agent via chat. They will, however, repeatedly remind you that a 'vendor technology issue that has impacted several airlines.' Nevermind that no other airline has canceled 1/10 the flights as Delta."

Passengers reported difficulties in receiving hotel and meal vouchers despite Delta's assurances. Seymour Aes tweeted about conditions at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport: "People are sleeping on floors as gate agents are empty and unwilling to provide food or hotel vouchers to those affected."

Delta Air Lines markets itself as a premium airline with higher reliability than competitors but has historically struggled with recovery during operational meltdowns.
