The Hyatt Centric Waikiki Beach has garnered a reputation as one of the more challenging Hyatt properties for points redemptions. A recent trip to Honolulu provided an opportunity to evaluate this firsthand. With a cash rate under $200 and no resort fee for Globalist members, the choice appeared economical compared to other available options.

Despite being labeled a resort, the hotel offers minimal services. It features an associated restaurant that is not directly within the hotel, lacks beachfront access, and has only a small wading pool. Its urban setting places it a few blocks from the beach, making it convenient for walking.

A significant issue at this property is its approach to points redemptions and Globalist benefits. The hotel has been known to limit rooms available for points redemption and does not honor Globalist breakfast due to their restaurant remaining closed post-COVID-19 pandemic.

However, guests can charge meals from an advertised restaurant back to their room, though these charges do not earn points. Efforts to clarify compliance with Hyatt’s program standards went unanswered by Hyatt representatives.

In place of breakfast, the hotel offers 1,000 World of Hyatt bonus points per night—equivalent to approximately $14—which falls short for families needing breakfast provisions. Additionally, securing these points required follow-up after the stay.

Service levels at the hotel were inconsistent. Housekeeping was friendly but unreliable in terms of frequency and responsiveness to requests. Luggage assistance was also lacking despite advance notice.

There were positive aspects noted during the stay. Despite elite check-out being subject to availability at resorts, a late check-out was confirmed in advance which facilitated travel plans. An interesting feature included lending fish bowls with live fish for guest rooms—a detail that delighted younger guests.

The room itself was basic yet comfortable with an additional $30 upgrade providing a city view suite suitable for family accommodations. The pool area remained uncrowded but offered limited depth.

Additional amenities included a Starbucks Reserve in the lobby opening early at 4 a.m., beneficial for guests adjusting from different time zones.

Overall, while service and program benefits may be lacking at this property compared to typical Hyatt standards, its central location in Waikiki and unique offerings such as lending fish provide some redeeming qualities.
