John Ackerman Chief Executive Officer | Los Angeles World Airports

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has received the final train cars for its Automated People Mover (APM) project, marking a significant milestone in the airport's ongoing transformation. John Ackerman, CEO of Los Angeles World Airports, stated, “Receiving the final train cars for the APM signifies a major milestone for this project and our airport’s transformation. The APM will enhance the travel experience at LAX and set a new standard for sustainable transportation. As we move this project forward, we remain dedicated to delivering a state-of-the-art solution that reflects our commitment to our passengers, community and environment.”

LAX will be the first U.S. airport to utilize the INNOVIA 300 APM cars, which feature fully recyclable aluminum shells, a regenerative braking system, and designs that eliminate hazardous substances and toxic emissions.

The APM project emphasizes environmental sustainability. It has earned an Envision Gold Award for Sustainable Infrastructure from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI). Additionally, its Maintenance and Storage Facility is designed to meet LEED Gold standards by the U.S. Green Building Council, with nearly half of its power generated from photovoltaic systems.

Following approval by the Board of Airport Commissioners on July 18, the Los Angeles City Council sanctioned an agreement last week setting December 8, 2025 as the construction completion date. The agreement also allocates an additional $550 million to LINXS Constructors to cover added work and extended construction timelines.

Shawn West, LINXS Constructors Board Member, remarked on this development: “The arrival of all the APM vehicles in Los Angeles marks the beginning of the next phase of this enormous project. Our focus now shifts from the construction of the APM’s physical structures to an extensive testing process with each and every vehicle.”

The APM train service is scheduled to commence operations in January 2026. It will provide 24/7 service with trains arriving at stations every two minutes during peak hours from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
